The fault in our stars is a novel written by John Green, The novel takes into the eyes of a 16-year-old girl called Hazel Grace Lancaster as she is not the typical teenager from Indianapolis. Hazel has cancer which has spread from her thyroid gland to her lungs. She is forced by her parents to attend a support group, she feels the support group is the worst part of her life until she stumbles into a 17-year-old Augustus Waters. Hazel feels that Augustus really understands her as they both share the same interests and find romance along their journey.
A character I found interesting throughout the novel was Augustus Waters. The reason behind this is because although he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma he remained positive and happy throughout the novel even till the point before his death. Augustus is an interesting character as he uses a cigarette “metaphorically” as quoted “you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do it’s killing”. This quote empowers his character as it gives a bold line of how interesting he is and how unique every thought process he goes through changes how the story lays out. Augustus is an intriguing character as he has had cancer yet he is brave enough to go near something that can give people cancer. Personally I feel I can relate to this as I am constantly trying to push my boundaries and live on the edge of life and just look forward to having a good time.
A message I took from the text is that time is your worse concern as you have only limited amount of it in your lifetime and you never know when your time will be up and how long you have till it is all over. “What a slut time is. She screws everybody” is a quote said by Augustus when Hazel has a close death experience. Personally I can relate to this quote as time ticks to fast for me to accomplish my goals while I’m alive, Being young is one of the best parts of your life as you are able to have fun and enjoy life but as time ticks you are unable to slow it down and days pass without you even knowing.
Hazel faced many challenges on her journey through life, one challenge that I found most interesting was her being unable to understand that she was loved. A quote from Hazel “ I’m a grenade and at some point, I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?” This quote is important as it shows Hazel’s state of mind and how being loved can sometimes be an illusion. Hazel consistently blocks the love from others out of her life as she feels she is not worthy of it and it will go to waste in a matter of time.
I feel the title of this text is appropriate because its a fault in their lives that they try to live through. The cancer is slowing in ending their lives. The star is the part where they admit to themselves they deserve to live and be equal. “That they are equal” is a quote that Hazel and Augustus don’t show throughout the story as they are constantly fearing the judgement of others because of their cancer and don’t understand that they are treated as equally as others.
Personally I would recommend this book to people who are diagnosed with cancer or people who are struggling in life. This book takes you into the mind of a cancer patient who has been through the pain of life and how she works her way around the problems that arise. I feel as if people can learn off what she does to improve their lives and avoid the mistakes that Hazel makes throughout the story.
